Telepsychiatry

Psychiatric Associates of North Carolina is proud to provide the option of telepsychiatry to our patients. Telepsychiatry is the delivery of psychiatric assessment and care through video conferencing. The HIPAA compliant video conferencing platform used by our providers provides patient autonomy, confidentiality, and privacy. The American Psychiatric Association supports the use of telemedicine as a “legitimate component of a mental health delivery system,” and many of our patients have given positive feedback to the ease and continuity of care that it provides. Patients can choose between in-office visits or connecting with providers from home or work, offering flexibility and convenience.

Benefits of Telepsychiatry

Telepsychiatry provides the convenience of receiving care from home, eliminating the need for travel and saving time. It enhances accessibility, particularly for individuals with mobility issues or those living in remote areas. This approach ensures continuity of care, allowing patients to maintain consistent treatment even when traveling or relocating. Online psychiatry offers flexibility allowing patients to conduct sessions in a comfortable and confidential setting of their choice.

Preparing for Your Telepsychiatry Appointment

To ensure a smooth and effective telepsychiatry session, follow these preparation steps:

  • Choose a Quiet, Private Space: Find a location where you won’t be interrupted, ensuring a distraction-free environment. Our providers ask you are not in a moving vehicle and that you disclose any individual present in the space.

  • Check Your Technology: Ensure your device (computer, tablet, or smartphone) has a working camera and microphone. Test your internet connection to avoid disruptions during the session. We recommend a secure wifi connection.

  • Download Necessary Apps: If using a mobile device, download the Zoom Cloud Meeting App. Some providers may use the Icanotes telehealth system which will open in browser and doesn’t require a download.

  • Prepare Your Materials: Have a list of symptoms, concerns, or questions ready to discuss with your provider. Gather any relevant medical records or notes that may be needed during the session.

  • Set Up Early: Log in to the digital waiting area a few minutes before your appointment time to ensure everything is working correctly and to reduce stress.
